My explanation for these parallel teachings is that it stems from two sources, 1) man’s innate spiritual intelligence; the veil is not so complete as to conceal all truth and intelligence gained in the pre-earth life, and 2) the Spirit of Christ, better known as the conscience, is the Light of Christ, which Light is divine intelligence or truth, and it would not surprise me one bit that God would plant into the hearts of men truths which uplift man towards his potential.
Deification is as old as man because it is as old as God. When God declared that his work was to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, it should be implicitly understood that his work and glory was to "remove the distinctions and barriers between us and to make us what God is." (Stephen E. Robinson) Because eternal life is the quality of life enjoyed by God and the exalted only, what kind of life God lives is the kind of live man may also enjoy and partake in.
Robinson further states, "The official doctrine of the Church on deification does not extend in essentials beyond what is said in the Bible, with its Doctrines and Covenants parallels, and in Doctrine and Covenants 132: 19-20…Those who are exalted by [God’s] grace will always be ‘gods’…by grace, by an extension of his power, and will always be subordinate to the Godhead. Any teaching beyond this involves speculation without support from either the Bible or other LDS Scriptures."
Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Dionysius, Athanasius, Maximus the Confessor, and Augustine writings all contain references to deification.
