Are Mormons Christians?

Yes, probably the biggest clue that this is the case is the official name of the Mormon Church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Webster Dictionary defines Christians as “one who professes to follow and believe in the religious principles of Jesus Christ.”[1]

One of the leaders of the Mormon Church, Apostle M. Russell Ballard, said "There are many who say that Latter-day Saints believe in a 'different Jesus' than do other Christians and that we are therefore not 'Christian.' . . . We believe in the Jesus of the New Testament, and we believe what the New Testament teaches about Him. We do believe things about Jesus that other Christians do not believe, but that is because we know, through revelation, things about Jesus that others do not know. . . .What we want most of all is for Christian and non-Christian alike to understand that we love the Lord Jesus Christ. We revere His name. We count it a great honor and privilege to take upon ourselves the name of Christ as Christians and as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."[2]

The Book of Mormon also attests to the fact that Mormons are Christian, with the subtitle: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The First Article of Faith, (the Articles of Faith are a group of principles that make up the main beliefs of the Mormon Church) states, “We believe in God the Eternal Father and in His son Jesus Christ and in the Holy Ghost.”[3] Members of the Mormon Church meet every Sunday to take the Sacrament and remember Christ’s atonement.

Although the name of the Mormon Church publicly announces that it is a Christian church and so do many other aspects of the Mormon religion, the criticism that Mormons are not Christian is the most commonly heard and used criticism. It is an interesting fact that so many claim that they know that Mormons are not Christians. Stephen E. Robinson a member of the Church and professor at Brigham Young University stated, “Though all the world may say that Latter-day Saints do not know or love or worship Jesus Christ, the truth is that we do. If this is not enough to be counted as Christian, then that word has lost its meaning.”[4]

  1. I cannot say you donot know Christ but the LDS Christ & Mine are 2 different beings…

If you look at LDS.org & mrm.org you can see the differences in how Christians & Mormons believe….

The REAL DIFFERENCES are terminology & Faith in WHO is Christ Jesus… Is he the One from the 1611 KJV Holy Bible? Or the Character Joesph Smith wrote about?

  2. I think we first have to define what it means to be Christian, which I have done on my blog here: http://mormonmysticism.blogspot.com/2007/11/chrism-olive-oil.html

Maybe we need to ask are those other really Christian.
